Strangling / Girdling Roots
Girdling roots are roots that grow in a circular pattern within the root system area instead of spreading laterally. This can quickly become problematic when the roots are near the tree collar or even pressed against the trunk. In such cases, they become strangling roots.
Here are some causes of girdling roots:
- Genetic tendencies of the tree;
- Problematic soil conditions;
- Neglect at the nursery before sale;
- Excessive mulch at the tree collar during planting;
- The tree is not planted in the appropriate hardiness zone.
The consequences of roots strangling the collar can be fatal for the tree. Over time, these roots will cut off the sap flow traveling between the branches and roots. Decline symptoms may become visible if the situation is not addressed before it's too late.
Fortunately, in most cases, we can resolve this issue using a professional air excavator. Here are several advantages of the pneumatic method:
- Virtually no damage to the roots;
- Better clearance for more effective intervention;
- Helps identify other potential problems;
- Allows access and work in the tightest spaces.
If girdling roots are detected early, root pruning can be performed to fix the issue before they become strangling roots. If the roots are already strangling, a more complex and meticulous intervention will be required. It is essential to understand that soil quality plays a major role in this type of problem. After a root operation, we strongly recommend an assessment by a certified arborist trained in pedology to identify the problem quickly.
