Root pruning
Root pruning involves cutting dead, diseased, girdling, or problematic roots. Work such as installing bio-barriers or root flare excavation, for example, requires cutting roots and making a meticulous selection. The root system is the heart of a tree's health and its anchorage; all roots to be cut must be approved by an expert because there can be heavy consequences.
Girdling/Circling Roots
Circling roots are roots that grow in a circular fashion within the root system area instead of progressing laterally. This can quickly become problematic when the roots are near the tree flare, or even pressed against the trunk. In this case, they will become girdling.
Here are the causes of circling roots:
- genetic tendencies of the tree;
- problematic soil;
- nursery neglect prior to sale;
- excessive mulch at the tree flare during planting;
- the tree is not located in the correct hardiness zone.
The consequences of roots girdling the flare can be fatal for the tree. Over time, the roots will cut off the sap traveling between the branches and the roots. Dieback may occur if the situation is not treated before it is too late.
In most cases, we can now resolve this problem using a professional air excavator. There are many advantages to using the pneumatic method, and here are a few:
- virtually no damage to the roots;
- better clearance for a more effective intervention;
- allows other problems to be spotted occasionally;
- allows access and work in the most restricted areas.
If circling roots are identified early, we can perform root pruning and resolve the problem before they become girdling. If the roots are already girdling, a more complex and meticulous intervention will be required. It is important to understand that soil quality can play a major role in this type of problem. Following a root operation, we strongly recommend an evaluation by a certified arborist trained in pedology to identify the problem quickly.
We are currently gathering data on the types of trees that are most at risk for root problems and will add this information as soon as possible to help you make the best decisions.
