April: Don’t Shed Your Layers Just Yet!

The warmth of April is slowly making its appearance. There’s still time for fruit tree pruning but hurry! This task should be completed before the first sap flow and ideally before buds open, usually by the end of April.

Arboriculture sees renewed activity in April as temperatures rise. This month is excellent for various tree maintenance tasks.

Most plants are now active. Take advantage of the last days before buds open to conduct a visual inspection of your trees. Look thoroughly, even at higher branches. You may notice anomalies that will become harder to detect once leaves emerge in summer.

If branches were broken or damaged during winter, take action. If needed, don’t hesitate to consult a professional.

In April, buds typically begin to open. Check that your trees’ buds are starting to emerge and if not, they should soon. Take a moment to admire nature’s yearly spectacle.

Although snow is rare in April, it can be heavy. If snow accumulates on your trees and you can safely remove it, do so! Your trees will appreciate the help.

It’s time to take down your winter protective coverings.

Take some time to enjoy a sweet treat with family by savoring our national syrup. Give a nod to the majestic sugar maples that make it possible.

If you’re considering planting a tree this year, now is the perfect time to plan. The ideal planting season is just around the corner!
