Basic Principles and Steps for Tree Planting

Tree Planting: Fundamental Principles

When planning a tree planting, several factors must be considered. Here are the most important ones:

Site Assessment

First, evaluate the site to ensure the selected tree meets your actual needs. Consider the location of buildings, power lines, pipelines, and existing vegetation before proceeding with planting.

Assessing Your Needs

Your current needs should be carefully studied, and you must consider the long-term effects of planting. For example, if you want a garden filled with sunlight-loving flowers, it would be unwise to plant a tree that will create shade over your flower beds once mature.

Understanding Soil Composition

It is recommended to analyze the soil on your property and choose a tree suited to that soil type for optimal growth. Additionally, ensure the soil conditions are good enough to support a mature tree. Conducting this analysis increases the chances of survival for the tree you plant.

Best Time for Planting

To maximize a tree’s survival and health, it is best to plant deciduous trees or shrubs in the spring when the soil temperature exceeds 5°C and before the buds have emerged. Deciduous trees and shrubs can also be planted in the fall, from leaf drop until the ground freezes.

For conifers, planting is recommended in either spring or autumn, between August and October.

Steps for Planting a Tree

Minimize Stress on Your Tree

Protect your tree during transport using burlap and secure the ends with twine to prevent damage. Plant it as soon as possible after delivery! If immediate planting is not possible, keep the soil moist in a cool, shaded area.

Preparing the Planting Site Properly

Dig a hole that is two to three times wider than the tree’s root mass. The tree’s root collar (the area where the roots meet the trunk) should be level with or slightly above the hole. Avoid digging too deep, as roots typically develop within the first foot of soil. If planted too deeply, the roots may suffer from a lack of oxygen.

Planting with Care

Carefully remove the tree from its pot, or if it is wrapped in burlap, remove the burlap and wire basket before placing the tree into the hole.

Ensuring the Tree is Straight

Make sure the tree is upright when placing it in the hole. It is helpful to have someone stand at different angles around the tree to check its alignment before proceeding.

Filling the Hole with Soil

Fill the hole about three-quarters of the way with soil and water thoroughly to help settle the soil and improve drainage. Ensure the root collar is level with or slightly above the soil surface. Finish filling the hole, then create a soil ring around the base of the tree to direct water toward the roots.

Adding Stakes if Necessary

If the tree is planted in a windy area or has a bare-root system, staking the tree can help prevent damage. Stakes keep the tree upright while allowing minimal movement for natural growth. Use soft and flexible materials to avoid damaging the trunk, and secure the ties in the lower part of the tree. The stakes should be removed after the first year of growth.

Forming a Mulch Ring Around the Tree

Spread a 2 to 4-inch layer of mulch around the tree, leaving a 1 to 2-inch gap around the trunk to prevent moisture buildup against the bark. Mulching helps retain soil moisture and reduces competition from grass and weeds. For more information, visit our blog on mulching.

Tree Maintenance is Essential

Water the tree at least once a week, or more frequently in hot weather. To check if watering is needed, remove mulch and inspect the soil—if it is dry, it's time to water. Rebuild the mulch ring after watering. In mid-autumn, gradually reduce watering frequency as temperatures drop.
By following these planting steps, you provide your tree with optimal conditions for growth and survival.
It is crucial to locate all underground utility lines before planting to prevent damage.
